Dear Mr. President:
On behalf of William Dekle and his Family, I humbly request that you grant William’s request for a Commutation. William is serving a life sentence without the possibility for parole for a nonviolent crime–Marijuana Trafficking. Although he has never been convicted of any sort of violent felony, he has been in a Federal Maximum Prison (USP) since September 27, 1990. He received this severe sentence at a time when it was believed to be lawful. Later, Supreme Court opinions have vacated such sentences for those who have commited similar crimes, but those decisions came too late to help Mr. Dekle. He is guilty of his crime, there is no doubt of that. He has suffered a severe penalty for that crime–far more sever than most, and his family and friends would greatly like to have him back. He will die in Prison if we don’t try.
William is very old and worn down man. He is tired and doesn’t pose a threat to anyone. Please give him a chance to come home. I support his request for clemency or at least for parole eligibility. I’m respectfully asking you to show him mercy. Thank you for considering my views and for taking time away from the big problems in our country to look into this Sir!
We see that you have a strong sence of justice, and that you temper that justice with mercy. We pray for you as you lead our country into a new era of fairness and prosperity. Please give William Dekle a chance to share in that era.
